Abandoned train station “Last train to Katowice”

Near Katowice, Poland there are about 25 abandoned trains in an old shunting yard.A majority of these engines date from the 1930’s.We parked our rental car about 300 meters away and walked all the way back to the yard where a steep staircase led up behind the railway bridge. When we arrived at the top, we were able to look down over the shunting yard. The grass grew between the rails, there was a large turntable on which rails were fixed.

IMG_7179.jpgBehind the turntable were a number of sheds. One train fitted in every shed. By turning the platform you could let a train run out of a shed and onto the main line. The high fence was open in places which made access simple. To the left of the trains was a high building with multiple cameras attached to it. We may have been inside for 20 minutes when we heard the sound of a gate being closed.

IMG_7159.jpgA man with a woman and a child stood in front of the gate. He had secretly locked the gate and started calling with his cell phone. We quickly cleaned up our belongings and walked to the gate. When I asked him if he would please open the gate, he responded refused. He kept calling. With the police of course! With my body I pushed full force against the fence and made a small opening. This allowed us to escape. Fortunately, he did not try to stop us because we would have had trouble. We quickly descended the stairs and walked away. We drove away very quickly and in the rear view mirror we saw the man quickly note our number plate.

IMG_7173.jpgWe decided that after this encounter it would be a good idea to cross the border with Czech Republic immediately. We apologize for the fact that we have just a few pictures but we were caught here and the risk was too great. I do not know what the fine is in Poland.
