It offers visitors to Cuba’s capital a taste of the city’s local art.Cuban artist Salvador Gonzáles Escalona describes his Afro-Cuban style as a mix of surrealism, cubism, and abstract art. After spending more than two decades producing artworks in Cuba, as well as the U.S., Norway, Italy, and Venezuela, the self-taught artist began adorning the alley outside his apartment with art in 1990.After filling the alley, which stretches for about two blocks, with mosaics, paintings, and sculptures, including a throne that bestows good luck and a bench made of old bathtubs, his works started spilling out onto street and up the sides of the buildings.The area was once rather desolate, but the colorful street now provides an eccentric backdrop for musicians and rumba dancers who entertain the increasing crowds of tourists and locals. Sunday afternoon rumba sessions are popular with tourists. A local children’s art program meets in the alley. The surrounding Cayo Hueso neighborhood once had a dangerous reputation, but Salvador’s art has helped to change perceptions of the area. In the evening, however, it remains an area where you can better stay away. Right around the corner I had my for $ 4 a night. Het biedt bezoekers van de hoofdstad van Cuba, een voorproefje van de lokale kunst van de stad.De Cubaanse kunstenaar Salvador Gonzáles Escalona beschrijft zijn Afro-Cubaanse stijl als een mix van surrealisme, kubisme en abstracte kunst. Na meer dan twee decennia te hebben besteed aan het produceren van kunstwerken in Cuba, evenals de VS, Noorwegen, Italië en Venezuela, begon de selfmade kunstenaar in 1990 het appartement met kunst te vullen.Na het vullen van het steegje, dat zich uitstrekt over ongeveer twee blokken, met mozaïeken, schilderijen en sculpturen, waaronder een troon die veel geluk brengt en een bank gemaakt van oude badkuipen, begonnen zijn werken zich naar de zijkanten van de gebouwen uit te breiden.Het gebied was ooit nogal verlaten, maar de kleurrijke straat biedt nu een excentrieke achtergrond voor muzikanten en rumba-dansers die de toeristen en de lokale bevolking vermaken. Rumbasessies op zondagmiddag zijn populair bij toeristen. Een lokaal kinderkunstprogramma wordt ook in het steegje vertoond. De wijk Cayo Hueso had ooit een gevaarlijke reputatie, maar de kunst van Salvador heeft deze reputatie kunnen veranderen. Het ’s avonds blijft het echter een gebied waar je beter weg kan blijven.Ik had hier trouwens mijn hostel voor 4 dollar per nacht. Met een rooftop uitzicht !
