Ochopee Post Office (smallest postoffice in the US)

The smallest post office in the United States in Ochopee, Florida only has space for one employee at a time but has been serving the region for generations GPS 25.9008 -81.2973Previously located inside the local general store, the post office was moved into its current home after the store burnt down in 1953. The small shed that houses the postal outpost was actually a storage closet for irrigation pipes before it was pressed into service as a post office. While the general store was never rebuilt, the small office has been more than sufficient for the infinitesimally small local population, last thought to hover around 11 souls. While full service, the Ochopee post office is simply a 7×8 shack with a cramped counter and mail slots on the back wall and a single fluorescent light to illuminate the space.Despite the tiny population of Ochopee, America’s post office is actually the postal hub for people within an area of over 130 miles around the Everglades-based mailroom. Many of these customers are members of the Miccosukee and Seminole tribes.Het kleinste postkantoor in de Verenigde Staten ligt in Ochopee, Florida en heeft slechts ruimte voor één werknemer. Het bedient de regio al generaties lang. GPS 25.9008 -81.2973.Eerder gevestigd in de plaatselijke winkel, werd het postkantoor verplaatst naar zijn huidige plek nadat de winkel in 1953 was afgebrand. Het kleine schuurtje waar de buitenpost zich bevond, was eigenlijk een opslagruimte voor irrigatiebuizen. Het is misschien even groot als twee Dixie-toiletten. Hoewel de winkel nooit is herbouwd, is het kleine kantoor meer dan voldoende geweest voor de plaatselijke bevolking van 11 personen. Het Ochopee-postkantoor verleent alle service ondanks zijn krappe ruimte en een slechte TL-verlichting om de ruimte van licht te voorzien.

Ondanks de piepkleine bevolking van Ochopee is het kleinste postkantoor van Amerika en misschien wel van de wereld eigenlijk het postcentrum voor mensen die leven in een gebied van 75 km rondom Ochopee  Veel van deze klanten zijn leden van de Miccosukee en Seminole stammen.
