I like music festivals. For the last few years I’ve been trying to attend a few each year, but usually they were just in the Netherlands and Belgium. After hearing amazing things about Colours of Ostrava, the biggest international music festival in Czech Republic, my girlfriend Angelica and I decided to give it a try.
And it was a perfect decision as the event turned out to be amazing. Colors of Ostrava was awarded the Festival Award in 2017 in the ‘best location’ category.
What a cool venue ! In the middle of an abandonned Coal plant. There were 21 different stages offering more than 350 programme items – concerts, theatre, films, workshops, discussions and art / design. There wasn’t just one kind of the music played but a big variety so everyone could find something for themselves, from hard rock to jazz and indie to electro. The artists weren’t only a local bunch but came from all over the world, including some big names like …… and even a band very famous in my country the Netherlands: Kensington.
But music wasn’t the most important thing for us at Colours of Ostrava. The fact why this festival stole our hearts was a great atmosphere and an amazing location. The industrial site really work well for such events and Dolni Oblast Vitkovice, a former iron and steel mill, was just incredible. 
The other advantage of the location was that all the stages were fairly close to each other yet the concerts didn’t interrupt each other. Walking around all the amazing industrial remnants was an excellent experience, the one we will not forget for a long time.
We were so impressed with the laid back, chillout atmosphere at the site. Everybody was so relaxed, enjoying the good music with friends. Unlike on the Dutch festivals there was an excellent choice of drinks and food, including many delicious meat options. A festival for meatlovers. 
There was even a map telling where you can get each kind of beer (dark, pilsner, wheat). What’s even better the prices were really affordable, no one took an advantage of the big event and didn’t charge three times more than usual. After buying an empty 0.3 liter glass for 0,75€ you can fill and refill it for 1,40€.

Take train 2. Get out after 3 stops and follow the festival people. The venue is right in front of you. Have fun !

Ik hou van muziekfestivals. De laatste jaren probeer ik er elk jaar een paar bij te wonen. Meestal gewoon lekker kortbij in Nederland of België. Na het horen van geweldige verhalen over Colors of Ostrava, het grootste internationale muziekfestival in Tsjechië, besloten mijn vriendin Angelica en ik het eens te proberen. 
Het was een juiste beslissing, want het evenement bleek geweldig te zijn. Colours of Ostrava is in 2017 bekroond met de Festival Award in de categorie ‘beste locatie’. Wat een gave locatie ! In het midden van een verlaten kolencentrale. Er waren 21 verschillende podia met meer dan 350 programma-items bestaande uit concerten, theater, films, workshops, discussies en kunst / design.
Er was een grote verscheidenheid van muziekstijlen zodat iedereen iets voor zichzelf kon vinden. Van hard-rock tot jazz en van indie tot electronic music. De artiesten kwamen niet alleen uit de regio maar ook uit het buitenland, waaronder enkele grote namen zoals Paul Kalkbrenner, London Grammar en N.E.R.D. en zelfs een band die erg beroemd is in mijn eigen land, Nederland: Kensington.
Maar muziek was niet het belangrijkste voor ons bij Colors of Ostrava. Het feit dat dit festival onze harten heeft gestolen was een geweldige sfeer en een geweldige locatie. De industriële site past echt goed bij dit evenement en Dolni Oblast Vitkovice, een voormalige ijzer- en staalfabriek, was gewoon heel apart om te zien. 
Zodoende kon ik twee hobby’s combineren: Urban Exploring met op de achtergrond lekkere muziek. Het andere voordeel van de locatie was dat alle podia redelijk dicht bij elkaar lagen en dat de concerten elkaar niet beïnvloedden qua geluid. 
Wandelen rond alle verbazingwekkende industriële overblijfselen was een uitstekende ervaring die we niet snel zullen vergeten. We waren erg onder de indruk van de relaxte, ontspannen sfeer. Iedereen genoot met zijn vrienden van de goede muziek. Anders dan op de Nederlandse festivals was er een ruime variatie aan keuze spijs en drank, waaronder veel heerlijke vleesopties. Een festival voor vleesliefhebbers. 
Er was zelfs een kaart die je kon vertellen waar je welk soort bier (donker, pilsener, tarwe) kon krijgen. De prijzen waren goed betaalbaar en niemand liep er echt stomdronken rond. Na het kopen van een leeg 0,3 liter glas voor 0,75 € kon je het opnieuw laten vullen voor 1,40 €.
