Early in the morning we left the camping and went by boat to the Stave church at Urnes. This is the oldest medieval stave church in Norway dating back to 1130AD. The wooden church has intricate carving on the inside and outside and are original. The church has had a rich history so be sure to listen to and enjoy the informative guide. There is a small gift shop/museum as well as restrooms.
The church is surrounded by a cemetery with headstones from more recent times. Wooden crosses and headstones from the original burials have long since rotted away. This is a remarkable little church and is worth the visit!
