La grotta Palazzese (the Summercave, Italy)

…..water clarity here is wonderful and the light in the gloom of the cave produces mysterious and poetic reflections. Cheers to the Summercave, Italy.

Eating cuy (Guinea pig)

Eating Guinea pig in Ecuador

The guinea pig also known as cavy is despite their common name not native to Guinea, nor are they closely biologically related to pigs, and the origin of the name is still unclear. They originated in the Andes of South America and they were originally domesticated as livestock, as a source of food, and continue to be. I can’t say it was very tasty but it was a good meal. It was very greasy. That’s why I got gloves on while eating. Let’s have a look in the kitchen.

Wij koken mosselen levend in water.

Vertigo and Moon bar, Bangkok

C6C66B78-501D-4076-8442-C56B28F4223EThis night we had a reservation in the Vertigo and Moon bar but we had totally overslept. The taxidriver drove us with high speed to this bar, because we did not want to miss out place at the bar. The Banyan Tree is a renown landmark in Bangkok with most TukTuk and taxis using it as a reference point. The Vertigo and Moon Bar on top of the Bangan Tree gave us a stunning view of the city with a variety of cocktails. Angelica chose a Cosmopolitain and I ordered a bottle of beer (of course).7A7184E6-9935-4B41-8F72-ED0248E75703The Vertigo and Moon Bar was worth experiencing and when we return to Bangkok we will try again to get out on that rooftop and drink in beautiful Bangkok by night – even in the rain. Dinner with the Sisters of Kim Jong-Un

This blog is in English and in Dutch (for the Dutch version you have to scroll down)

When I arrived in Ulaanbaataar, the capital of Mongolia, a dinner for one was waiting for me in the North Korean Pyongyang Baekhwa restaurant. The restaurant was well hidden at the first floor of the Daco building behind the Urgoo-1 cinema. The staff consisted of a cook, a bar woman and three girls around the age of 20 who were serving the drinks and food. They were called the sisters of Kim Jong-Un and they all came from Pyongyang, the capital of the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea. Staff from North Korea typically work on three year contracts, and are often highly trained graduates of arts colleges. Photography is generally not permitted inside so I am sorry for the bad quality. I had to shoot them secretly and very fast.IMG_4745.jpgNorth Korea is a totalitarian dictatorship in which the power lies with the Korean Workers’ Party and the Kim dynasty that has ruled the country since its founding. The political leader is Kim Jong-un, the grandson of founder Kim Il-sung, who is still honored as an eternal president. The girls spoke English very well and they were very friendly. I had a chat with them but they were not allowed to speak about certain things. That was forbidden by their government. They kept their mouths wisely shut and did not respond to my question. Probably the whole place was full of hidden cameras. The menu looked very varied but was only written in the Mongolian and Korean language. I could not read this with all those weird scratches.Schermafbeelding 2018-09-07 om 21.28.26.png I made a choice based on the photos that were on the menu. I ordered just small dishes. They had a mild spicy flavor but it was certainly very tasty and very much to eat. I only paid 18,000 Tugrik which corresponds to 6.28 euros. A ridiculously low price. On the TV there was karaoke music playing, a bit weird for a restaurant because who is going to sing karaoke in a restaurant? Here in the capital of Mongolia you have an exceptional amount of karaoke bars. Usually you have to rent a space where you can sing with 20 people in a private room. The decoration of the restaurant is very musty. Everywhere you see the classic DRPK kitsch and on a number of TV screens North Korea propaganda is continuously shown. A memorable theater performance is held every evening at 20: 00h. For the rest, the walls are decorated with intriguing images of the great leader Kim Jong-Un. IMG_4732.jpgThis restaurant chain is managed by the North Korean government. I once read in the Guardian that the staff is carefully selected. After all, the personnel could flee the Kim Jong-un regime. The consequences of this will have to bear the remaining family members. The first Western outpost of the restaurant chain was opened in Amsterdam 2012, in the residential neighborhood of Osdorp  along with Dutch co-owners. The menu and policies of this restaurant differed from its Asian counterparts, serving no dog meat or ginseng wine. However, in September, 2012, amid mutual accusations between the Korean staff and the Dutch partner, the restaurant closed.

Finally, a fact. There is no country in the world where the official ruler is deceased (Kim II-Sung). De facto runs his son’s business. Bit strange.IMG_4734.jpgCheck film of performance North Korean women’s band in the restaurant.

Once Upon a Time in Kazimierz (Krakow, Poland)

One upon a time in Kazimierz is a Jewish restaurant offering the sentimental journey to the old Jewish traditions in Krakow, eating out surrounded by settings from the turn of the 20th century, in an ambiance of old workshops and stores with the Klezmer music in the background. I noticed this restaurant when I was searching the internet for a special place to have dinner, so I decided going to Krakow with my partner Angelica.

IMG_7224.jpg
Preserves, groceries, jugs, musical instruments and all kinds of sometimes difficult to identify “stuff” stored on the shelves, hanging on the walls and from the ceilings remind that the General Store well deserved its name “general”….. All these memorabilia otherwise useless on their own, here suddenly regained their significance providing a vital connection with the past. The restaurant offers Jewish cuisine with strong Polish influence. Some may say that actually it is other way around, but honestly claims on both sides are not conclusive. It seems that “cuisine” is rarely a battleground for “purism”. Taking advantage of this “lawlessness” various culinary “delicacies” can easily find their way to any kitchen and then in disguise claim to be “traditional”.

IMG_7229.jpgFrom the menu, overwhelmingly the best note gets roasted duck with cranberries. You may also try Czulent (Cholent) – a Jewish stew being a mix of beans, chickpea and barley with beef, veggies and everything else you can have in the kitchen!. This slow cooking dish (if prepared correctly it takes about 12 hours of stewing) is an answer to the Jewish religious laws (Halachah) requiring serving warm food on Sabbath when cooking (making fire) is strictly forbidden.

IMG_7225.jpgCholent answers this challenge by being left overnight on hot ashes (fire is lit well before Sabbath). The extra bonus from this slow cooking process is that all individual flavors of spices and ingredients are thoroughly “mixed” generating one new “divine” cholent flavor!

IMG_7230.jpgThe Polish part of the menu includes traditional pierogi (kind of dumplings stuffed and served in hundreds different ways), red borsch (may be served either clear or with beans, boiled egg or croquette stuffed with meat), liver with boletus (porcini mushrooms)…..

IMG_7227.jpgThe bottom line is that the restaurant Once Upon a Time in Kazimierz it is a great place for lunch, coffee, tea and other more or less alcoholic drinks. Among them you will find kosher beer, wine and vodka imported from Israel (BTW – this is the only kosher stuff served in the restaurant “Dawno Temu na Kazimierzu”).

IMG_7234.jpgBut let me be clear – the restaurant “Once Upon a Time in Kazimierz” may not be the best place for a romantic dining event. Certainly you will find bigger choice of more elaborate dishes and more romantic scenery in other restaurants in Cracow, but that is not the point.

Alien Giger Bar…

Aliens

Yummiee ! GPS: 46.584251821900054, 7.082280455600975
