Zombieworld (Amazone,Ecuador 2016)

Zoals jullie weten werken mieren in groepjes.

English version:
The Zombie ant. He exists. A true story. During the nocturnal jungle walk near the lodge on the pitch-black lake our guide suddenly pointed to a fungus, a mushroom (Ophiocordycepsaustralis). Beside the mushroom there was a giant dead ant with a kind of antenna that emerged from his brain. At the end there was a bright red button. The ant was deceased last week so the guide could determine . After that his story about the zombie ant started. The type of fungus is one of the most intelligent life forms within the Amazon region. Now do not start laughing but just keep on reading. Maybe you should first watch the video below so that you are convinced of the existence of the zombie ant, because I’ve seen it!

To ensure the survival of the species, the mushroom needs to multiply. But without vision and without arms or legs that would be very hard. So nature founds its way and developed a strong piece of survival tactics.
These fungal parasites can manipulate the behavior of ants by injecting them with bioactive substances. In this way he first learned to distinguish the ants. As you know, ants work in groups. So you have the workers, the soldiers but also the scouts and the queen.

The scouts search the area and as soon as they have found something tasty, one of the chief scouts blows a whistle and the workers drag the goodies to their homes. However, the mushroom has a gigantic sense of smell. Based on this sense of smell, he can distinguish between a scout (always a different scent because he comes in many places) and a soldier ant (stays close to the hut).

When he perceives a scent from a scout, for example of a fallen leaf of a tree that he thinks his future offspring have a good breeding ground for, he suddenly makes himself attractive to the ants. The scout eats the mushroom and the parasite enters the ant’s body. Within a few days, this parasite finds its way to the brain of the scout. After a week the parasite takes over the consciousness of the ant.

The ant becomes a zombie. He only does things that the parasite “whispers” to him. The infected scout orders the other healthy ants to bring all those tasty leaves 100 meters further away to the environment where the mushroom has his habitat. Within a week, a single buffet is arranged which in the following weeks serves as a breeding ground for the small mushrooms that have yet to be “born”. During that week an antenna with red bud grows out of the body of the ant (scroll up to the first picture).

If the mushroom thinks that there are enough leaves, he orders the scout to climb a tree. When he gets to the top of the tree, the infected ant gets the order to plunge down. During its fall, the red button will tear open and all traces in the red button will spread over a large area.
Weeks later you also see that the mushrooms have spread over that same area. Reproduction is a fact. So you have many kinds of mushrooms that this creepy trick. Some with an ant, some with a spider or a bird. When it’s our time to be infected ?You can read it again at:

This night we had a reservation in the Vertigo and Moon bar but we had totally overslept. The taxidriver drove us with high speed to this bar, because we did not want to miss out place at the bar. The Banyan Tree is a renown landmark in Bangkok with most TukTuk and taxis using it as a reference point. The Vertigo and Moon Bar on top of the Bangan Tree gave us a stunning view of the city with a variety of cocktails. Angelica chose a Cosmopolitain and I ordered a bottle of beer (of course).
The Vertigo and Moon Bar was worth experiencing and when we return to Bangkok we will try again to get out on that rooftop and drink in beautiful Bangkok by night – even in the rain. Cheers🍺🍹🍸

The Netherlands never had to deal with a radiation disaster of this magnitude and were therefore not well prepared for its approach. So it had to be improvised quickly on all kinds of levels. The RIVM was called in to measure any increased radioactivity and to make dose estimates.
On 2 May the radioactive cloud came over the Netherlands and the RIVM indeed measured increased radioactivity in the air. With rain on 3 and 4 May, many radioactive particles came on the ground. The greatest risk to health was contamination of milk and agricultural products in the Netherlands and imported contaminated food, such as mushrooms, especially from Eastern Europe. This situation would last for weeks …..
While the world is dealing with present conflicts, one point on the planet stands in a great silence. Glancing at its shivering lonesome as a result of the Chernobyl Disaster, the town of Pripyat is not-suggesting what might happen once again but proving mother’s nature unlimited ability to disarm every leading human chaotic results.
This Chernobyl/Pripyat photograph serie made by Verena (www.derdetage.nl) tells the story of a once beautiful town that was founded in 1970 as the ninth nuclear city of the soviet union, and had to evacuate its 50.000 inhabitants in within 36 hours after the accident.
Indeed, the public building interior photographs reflects Pripyat’s horrors; but there’s also a catch for the town has become a subject for natures occupation, a reclaim. And so, starting from the yellow circles peeled behind the regretting gym hall walls, getting to the tango-dancing hospital lamps, to the never-finished broken-chess play, we find ourselves seeking for a decent inhale of oxygen (which we might, somehow, find while looking at the pile of gas masks shining below gravy books).
Hold up to that feeling, because you might get a clue of what comes around while exposed the abandoned basketball court.
The serie shows a modern fairytale you won’t hear in the news; its fascinating point of view grips the lens from a wider scene, where Ukraine and Russia each and together has their conflicts, to a minimized spot; to a place where as the last photograph comes in the play trees grow through broken windows and grass pushes up through the cracks in rest.

The market is called ‘life-risking’ market because its stalls are attached to the Mae Klong-Ban Laem railway, which is a short railway line running from and to Mahachai and Mae Klong. Vendors at the market put out parasols or canvas to protect themselves against the sun. The shelters stick into the railway where visitors walk and do their shopping. When each signal of the arriving train rings, chaos happens: vendors will rush to close their parasols and canvas, along with clearing all goods that will obstruct the coming train at a great speed. Once the train passes, parasols and canvas will be reopened as goods are again put into their usual place next to the railroad. The market, accordingly, is so called ‘Hoop Rom (umbrella/parasol-closing) Market’. The practice is usual for vendors and local people, but not for tourists who will definitely find the scene exciting and enjoyable at each visit. The parasol-closing event happens eight times per day according to the time that trains leave Mahachai for Mae Klong and depart Mae Klong for Mahachai. Trains will arrive at Mae Klong Station at 8.30 a.m., 11.10 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 5.40 p.m., and depart the station at 6.20 a.m., 9.00 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.
To arrive by car, take Thonburi-Pak Tho route until the 63rd kilometer. Keep left and enter the paralleled elevated highway to read the centre of Samut Songkhram. Drive past the first light and the market. At the second light, turn right and cross over the railway to arrive at Mae Klong Railway Market.
